To answer the tags - it’s entitlement, pure and simple.  Straight, male gamers have been the “dominant” market in games for so long that now they absolutely do not want anyone else in the sandbox sharing the toys.  It’s normal to fear change and be made slightly uncomfortable by it, but it’s also normal to evolve out of that fear and realize that greater choice and variety benefits everyone.  Having a more diverse population of gamers can only help games grow and develop into better experiences that reflect a broader array of opinions, lifestyles and tastes.

But evolution takes time, and some games will fall short when they try to incorporate new ideas or welcome new people into the fold.  Those stumbles, apparently, are inexcusable.  One strike system.  I didn’t like that Anders hit on me in Dragon Age 2 which means anything gay in videogames is bad and wrong and uncomfortable and I hate it so just stop now.  Instead of trying to offer actual helpful criticism, or respectfully articulate why they think the system needs refining, the jilted gamers have decided anything “gay” or for “women” or for “casual players” is automatically shit, because they didn’t like a game or two where those aspects turned up.  They don’t like that they’re being forced to adapt, even though many of these changes are still completely optional in games.  There’s no aiding the process, in their minds, it’s our way or no way.  Because hey, weren’t games so much better back before women and queers an minorities showed up to ruin it for everyone?

Yeah, Duke Nukem and Lara Croft’s Hindenburg tits.  Those sure were the days, guys. :|
